Set caravan beds up

[VIDEO] How to build the beds in a caravan

Set caravan beds upMaking up the beds in a touring caravan can prove to be quite the task if you have never done it before. The mountain of cushions can look quite intimidating and turn bed time in to a game of giant jigsaw.

Now I’m talking about fixed beds because they are already made up. I want to focus on the lounge areas and how you turn those into beds.

I want to help you learn how to build the beds in a caravan, and with some practice  be able to set them up within a couple of minutes.

[alert-note] I have recorded a separate video for each bed type demonstrating the process [/alert-note]

Types of beds

In  a touring there are a few different types of beds that can be made up from your lounge arrangements:

  • Double bed – built from a standard parallel lounge area
  • Double bed – built from an L-shape lounge area
  • Bunk beds – built from side dinette or over rear lounge

To make up each of these beds should not take any more than a couple of minutes once you have done it a few times. They are really simple to do and require no tools or specific skill to do so.

If you want to see how to build the beds read on, I have recorded videos to demonstrate the process of making up each bed type.

Building the double bed from a parallel lounge

Step by step instructions:

  1. Remove the table and base cushions from the side dinette
  2. Place one hand on top of the bunk and one hand underneath, pull away from the wall and continue to rotate with the bottom of the bunk moving up towards your face (see video)
  3. Unfold the second part of the bunk and lay flat
  4. Release the safety board from the bunk using the poppers
  5. Swing the safety board from underneath the bunk to cover the window and fasten in to place using the poppers on either side of the wall
  6. Depending on what caravan you have, place the bottom bunk support in place, this could be the table in collapsed position, pull out slats or loose slats
  7. Put the second set of bunk safety boards into place, these are stored loosely and slide into place using metal clips inside the front face of the bunk board
  8. Put the mattresses into place, usually your base cushions unfold to become the mattresses for the bunks
  9. Lastly, fix the ladder in place by positioning the hooks on the ladder into the lips on the front of the bunk

Very similar steps apply for making up the bunk over the double bed you make up in a 5 berth caravan. If you would prefer me to record a separate video demonstrating this please let me know in the comments section below.

Building the double bed from a parallel lounge

Step by step instructions:

  1. Remove the base and back cushions from the lounge to clear space
  2. Side the slats from underneath front chest, extend to length of bed boxes and hook into place
  3. Reposition base and back cushions upside down on the bed – these will be our mattresses

Building the double bed from an L shape lounge

Step by step instructions:

  1. Remove the base and back cushions from the lounge to clear space
  2. Slide the bed slats from under the front bed box (that extends the width of the caravan) out to the corner unit and clip into place
  3. Reposition the base and back cushions upside down – these will be our mattresses

In Summary

So hopefully you now know how to build the bed/s in a touring caravan. Remember that there will be slight differences to the bed setups with all caravans , but the process is very much the same.

I hope you found this article useful, please let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Similarly, if you have any further questions I would love to hear from you.

See you next time!

  1. Hi Josh,
I was wondering if you can help? I have just came across your website when searching the web for advice on how to set up our caravan bed, we have a U shaped coach area in our caravan (Hobby 650 -2006 model) and have never been able to figure out how the arrangement of cushions should be laid to give us an extra bed, it is a maze!
Any advice you can give would be really helpful and I can email photographs if that is helpful?
    Thanks very much
    Gemma

  2. Hi Josh

I have the same problem as Gemma but ours is an L-shaped 2003 Abbey Freestyle. I just cannot figure out how to place the darn cushions. Could you send a pic of the bed made up, so I can see how the layout should be?

    thanks in advance
    Tracy

  3. Hi Josh,

Thanks for sharing this video. I try to build a bunk bed like this in my caravan. It only has a dinette, not the possibilities for an extra bed yet. So i’m very interested in the folding system so i can make one by myself. In your video I can see a horizontal and vertical part of the frame but i’m wondering how it exactly works. Can you share that with me? Maybe you have some pictures or a video of the working of the frame itself? Can’t find it on the internet.

    Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Eline, Did Josh come back to you with measurements or pictures as I am also wanting to do exactly the same as you. Regards Tim.

      1. I am also looking for more info on building this style of bunk bed, please direct me to the plans as well! Thank you! Denise
